Signed Artist Proofs

The R.Crumb Site is pleased to announce our Artist Proofs Sale of signed proofs from sold-out editions.

About Artist's Proofs: Each edition sets aside a certain amount of prints exclusively for the artist, not to exceed 10% of the edition. So if there are 120 prints in the edition, Crumb will receive 12 artist proofs for his own use. He can frame them, give them as presents, sell them, burn 'em, do whatever he wants with them. Here, he is thankfully selling them. An artist proof may vary slightly in one or two colors compared to the rest of the edition, and therefore be relegated to proof rather than to the edition, where all prints must be completely unified in color, clarity and quality. But most of Wildwood's artist proofs are exactly the same as the rest of the edition. All are hand-signed by Robert Crumb.

New "Crumb on Others" Interview

Check out the latest "Crumb on Others" interview (part seven) between Robert and Wildwood Serigraphs publisher Alex Wood. Crumb gives his opinions on the famous and infamous, including Annette Funicello, Lenny Bruce and Harvey Pekar.

Also, we have updated our collection of Robert's Custom Signatures on prints made by Wildwood over the last twelve years with new submissions by our readers, thank you.

Wildwood Prints

Over the years, printer Alexander Wood has created over a dozen serigraph reproductions of images he enjoys. Some of them were Japanese woodblock prints, some old world maps and even a John Tenniel illustration. Some were editions with other cartoonists (Lynda Barry, Charles Burns). Some of these editions are still available and presented to the rcrumb.com site for the first time at Wildwood Prints.

All of the editions are printed on archival paper with archival ink. All are hand-pulled and committed to the same quality that you enjoy in Crumb's editions.

Giant Summer Print Sale

The R.Crumb Site is pleased to announce our Giant Summer Print Sale of rare lithographs and etchings from sold-out editions. Publisher Alex Wood is offering select prints from his personal collection at the most reasonable prices available. Their authenticity and quality is guaranteed by Wildwood Serigraphs and the Official R.Crumb Site

"Crumb and I have done around two dozen editions, most of them serigraphs, but some etching editions as well. All of our editions are sold directly to the public (not through any galleries) at extremely low prices. I've had people in the "Art Biz" tell me the artwork would sell better if it were priced higher, that no one is going to take any artwork seriously if it's priced below a grand. But that's not how we feel, and Crumb is insistent on keeping his artwork as affordable as possible for all of his readers.

"Once an edition sells out, the print values increase, of course. It's difficult to assess how much each print is worth. Prices on ebay help establish the market value, and also auctions. I've heard, for example, that the Cheap Thrills print sold for as much as $2,800, and selling regularly at $2,500 in galleries. All I know is we try to offer any sold out print at the lower end of the spectrum. I want people to feel confident that if they're buying a print from rcrumb.com, they're getting an authentic print in perfect condition at a good price."

Alex Wood, Publisher

PS:
I also want to give everyone a heads-up that Crumb and I are going to publish his Hup comic books (there are four of them). They've been out of print from some time now, and we're planning on printing and releasing Hup #1 around Christmas time. I'm very excited about that, because the Hup series are some of my favorite Crumb comics of all time.

Footsy Etching

ORIGINAL IMAGE

REVISED ETCHING

NEW ETCHING RELEASE: FOOTSY REWORKED
Limited Edition of 50 etchings

In Weirdo #20 (1987), Crumb created an 8 page comic called Footsy. The splash page was later used to create Wildwood's first serigraph edition (30 colors) with Crumb. Above is the image as it appeared in Weirdo. In 2012, a French publisher asked if he could use that same illustration for the cover of a French edition of My Troubles With Women. Crumb used that opportunity to rework the illustration. The following are Crumb's comments about why he reworked the illustration.

Crumb: I reworked the illustration because I wanted to make the desks more authentic looking. I discovered a photograph in an old high school yearbook from the school I went to that showed the desks in their complete structure. I was never satisfied with the way I drew those desks originally. I don’t know why I made them look like this bell shaped-pedestal type of thing. I don’t know where I got that. They were nothing like that, obviously, when I saw the photo. So last year, when the publisher asked to use that illustration for the cover of My Troubles With Women [the French version], I saw that as my chance to make it right; you know, obsessive-compulsive type of stuff.

Alex: You think it looks better?

Crumb: Yes I do. I think it looks much better. And I tend to do those kind of corrections a lot if I see something I did wrong in an earlier drawing and it’s going to be reprinted, I usually correct it and make it right before it’s printed again.

Alex: So it’s nothing uncommon, you rework drawings all the time if you can correct a problem.

Crumb: Yeah, I do it a lot. If the thing’s gonna be reprinted, y’ know, I have to correct any mistakes. So I think this looks much better.

Rcrumb.com is proud to present an edition of 50 reworked Footsy etchings. White archival Hahnemuhle paper is 12 x 16.5 inches. Image size is 7.5 x 11 inches. Embossed area is 8.5 x almost 12 inches.  Each print is numbered, dated and signed by Crumb, and comes with our guarantee for your complete satisfaction. (There are no certificates of authenticity offered with etching editions.)

$420 each

Bijou Funnies Serigraph

Wildwood Serigraphs and rcrumb.com are exclusively releasing Crumb's Bijou Funnies #6 as our new signed serigraph edition. First published as a comic by Kitchen Sink in September 1971, Bijou #6 may not be Crumb's most famous cover, but it could be one of Crumb's most historically accurate narratives of the early '70s, a time that transformed Western civilization forever — Women's Lib! Aside from the social significance, which Crumb imbues with his own humor, the graphic implementation of the ray background is unique for Crumb covers, and works nicely with his playful masthead.

Publisher Alex Wood says, "If I had ten bucks every time I heard a customer complain how badly he wanted to buy Crumb's artwork but it wasn't exactly wife-friendly, I'd be flying to Bali first class. But now, here we have a classic Crumb print, and guess what fellas? Now you can finally buy a Crumb print for the wife." You buy it for whatever reason — the reason we printed it is because we like it, it's Crumb, and it's great.

The signed and limited edition of 100 is printed on archival cream paper 20" x 25." The image is 14" x 18." It's a 21-color serigraph, and each print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. To read what Crumb wrote for the certificate, visit the Crumb on Crumb feature on our website.

$325 each

To be released January 22, 2013.
